Arlington, VA — Today, Tenley Peterson announced the endorsements of former Arlington County School Board Chair Barbara Kanninen and former Arlington County Sheriff Beth Arthur. Tenley Peterson is seeking the Democratic nomination for an open seat on the Arlington County Board in 2024.
A former member and two-time chair of the Arlington County School Board (served 2016–2022), Kanninen stated, "Tenley Peterson is the kind of smart, experienced, data-and-value driven candidate I love to support. I know she will be a strong supporter of our children and schools and a thoughtful steward of our taxpayer dollars. Please join me in voting for Tenley in the Democratic Primary on June 18."
Arthur, former Arlington County Sheriff for over twenty years (served 2000–2023), stated, "From her years of service on Arlington's Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission, Tenley has a. strong understanding of public safety and our budget. She is aware of the needs of the Sheriff's Office and has supported efforts to increase staffing to improve morale by decreasing mandatory overtime and lockdowns. As a commissioner, Tenley has also supported the Crisis Intervention Center, which redirected people from the jail to appropriate behavioral. healthcare services. Tenley is a compassionate supporter of public safety, and I encourage everyone to rank Tenley #1 on or before June 18th.”
In response to both endorsements, Peterson said, “I'm grateful to receive Barbara's and Beth's endorsements. I enjoyed working with both of them when I was Chair of the Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission and always appreciated their perspectives on school- and public-safety-related budget issues. They helped me gain a deeper understanding of how our budget translates to real-life impacts on the County.”
Peterson has also been endorsed by County Board Chair Libby Garvey; former Board chairs Katie Cristol, Christian Dorsey, and Jay Fisette; 35 current and former County Commissioners and Councilors; Northern Virginia Labor Federation; and others yet to be announced.

Peterson is also an APS substitute teacher, mom of three, union member, and a communications professional. Peterson is a progressive Democrat who believes that a public servant’s number one responsibility is putting people first when making policy decisions. If elected, Peterson will bring experience, pragmatism, and kindness to the County Board to find solutions that work for all of Arlington.
