Arlington, VA — Today, Tenley Peterson is pleased to announce the endorsement of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 (AFL-CIO/CLC) and Greater Greater Washington (GGW). Tenley Peterson is seeking the Democratic nomination for an open seat on the Arlington County Board in 2024.
Matt Girardi, Political and Communications Director of ATU Local 689 stated, “Tenley Peterson is a strong advocate for working class people, economic justice, and mass transit in Arlington. Local 689 is proud to endorse her candidacy. Make no mistake: Tenley's ideas move Arlington to be more equitable and accessible for all."
Greater Greater Washington said of Tenley Peterson, “She displays a deep understanding of the policy levers she could use as a Board member to improve housing affordability. She’s the only candidate in Arlington (or perhaps in any race we’ve endorsed in recently) to mention allowing single-stair buildings to reduce housing costs, something the Virginia General Assembly is exploring. Peterson supports building more three- and four-bedroom apartments for families, giving them an alternative to townhomes and single-family homes.”
GGW continued, "We need more elected officials who can speak to the benefits of that lifestyle, and will fight for the improvements needed, like adding bus and bike lanes to Arlington’s streets, to give more people access to it as well.”
In response to ATU Local 689 endorsement, Peterson said, “I am thrilled to have the support of ATU 689. Public transit is a cornerstone of what makes Arlington a wonderful place to live and work, and our ATU union members ensure Arlingtonians can get where they need to go every single day. Their support underscores my commitment to championing the needs of working-class people, advancing economic justice, and improving mass transit in Arlington. I look forward to collaborating with ATU 689 members to improve and expand public transit across the DMV region."
In response to Greater Greater Washington’s endorsement, Peterson stated, “It is an honor to receive Greater Greater Washington’s endorsement. GGW has been a leader in promoting policies that make Arlington a thriving and inclusive community with walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, robust public transit, plentiful parks, and diverse housing options. I’ve been proud to lead these efforts in Arlington and look forward to partnering with GGW on land use, transportation, and housing policies to keep our county accessible, sustainable, and vibrant.”
Peterson is a six-term Arlington County Commissioner, including four years of service as Chair of the Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission and her current service as the Vice Chair of the Planning Commission and Chair of its Site Plan Review Committee Sub-group.
